Denomination: DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia
First harvest: 1968
Grapes: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon 15% Cabernet Franc
Type of land: The land on which the vineyards stand has various and composite morphological characteristics with a strong presence of limestone areas rich in marl and stones and partially clayey; they are located at an altitude between 100 and 300 meters above sea level, with exposure to the West/South-West.
Training system: Spurred cordon
Planting density: From 3,600 plants/ha to 5,550 plants/ha for older plants and 6,200 plants/Ha for more recent plants.
Climate: It was a rather unusual vintage in Bolgheri, as in the rest of Italy but certainly a somewhat hastily misjudged vintage. In Bolgheri there was rain, but not as excessive as in other areas of Italy. For Cabernet grapes, however, it was possible to observe never phenolic ripening
obtained in other years and with great expression of aromas and scents favored by the slow maturation that took place on the plants. The winter was quite mild, while the spring started late with a rather harsh month of April compared to the seasonal norm and this contributed to the delay in the vegetative start.
In May the vegetation started thanks to the arrival of warmer temperatures. The summer was characterized by sunny days and average temperatures until the beginning of July. Since the first ten days of July, some disturbances have occurred which have led to rainfall and a drop in temperatures, marking the end of summer already in mid-August. This situation required a great deal of work by the agronomists in the field to carefully manage the vineyard.
The north winds that occurred towards the beginning of September allowed the grapes to dry and ripen slowly.
Excellent results in terms of ripening of the grapes achieved with the cabernets which allowed the production of healthy, crunchy grapes with excellent total acidity and PH.
The trend of the vintage is very noticeable in the wine due to the alcohol content but above all due to the spicy notes and the large aromatic component which makes the wine pleasant even at a young age.
Harvest: The harvest, strictly by hand, began with the Cabernet Franc grapes, which were the first to reach excellent phenolic ripeness, in the second ten days of September, continuing with those of Cabernet Sauvignon from the end of September and then concluding, with the grapes from the vineyards of the Castiglioncello di Bolgheri hills, towards the end of October. Healthy grapes, respectable veraison, reduced sugar content and
good acidity.

Vinification: Soft pressing of the grapes and subsequent fermentation in steel at a controlled temperature of around 30° - 31°C (without the addition of external yeasts), with medium maceration slightly longer than the norm in use due to the vintage, leading to around 11 -15 days maceration times for Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Frequent interventions of pumping over of the musts and délestages. Subsequent malolactic fermentation in steel completed at the end of November 2014.
Aging: From the first days of December 2014 the wine was placed in French oak barriques where it spent a period of refinement of 24 months before being destined for the preparatory phases of bottling and a subsequent phase of refinement in glass before its marketing.
